As I was heading home from the office I received the call that would change my life forever.

It was Thursday the 16th of June, 2001, a beautiful day outside, and I had the top down... looking forward to the ride.

These next few minutes... they will be burned into my mind for the rest of my life. I turned the radio up because Aerosmith was on.

I slid on my Ray-Bans and began singing right along with Steven and his boys...

"Your thinking's so complicated ... I've had it all up to here... But it's so overrated... Love and hated... Wouldn't trade it... Love me jaded"

Just as we were about to start the chorus together, my cell phone rang.

"Phil", he said. "Yes, this is Phil, who's this?" "I'm the guy that's going to make your wife a widow Phil. You're a dead man."... click.

Freaked out, I tried calling the number back, but I just got a busy signal. My mind was racing a thousand miles a minute and I had to pull over to collect myself.

Whoever just called me had threatened my life.

It was 1977.

Carter was President, Led Zeppelin had played their final concert, the NASA Space Shuttle had completed its first test flight, Apple had released their Apple II home computer...

Everything that was happening in the world around me was really quite a bit of a blur because I was too busy getting my real estate license to add to my fresh new Law degree.

Real Estate was my passion, and Law I thought... was how I'd make my millions. Turned out they'd they'd both come into play in that regard, but I'll get to that momentarily.

I worked hard that year...

...I mean "busting ass" hard... and by the time it was done I had those 2 pieces of paper, my Law degree, and my Real Estate license... that would lead me all the way through the next 2 decades.

Going platinum...

20 years later I was earning a terrific living as an attorney and was a partner in my firm. I had millions in the bank thanks to my real estate dealings over the years.

That culmination of my experiences had turned me into a formidable investor, making me money at nearly every turn.

Law had been good to me for sure. But real estate...

I really don't know how long I searched online that day. In retrospect it must have been hours. The sun had set and it was getting dark out.

Had I started my search in the late morning? I just don't know.

But the one thing I am certain of is that those hours of surfing the Internet led me to a software business for sale.

A software business that I would be buying just days later.

Oh crap I'm hooked...

Over the next couple of years I grew to love the idea of my online business. It could provide a flexibility and freedom that was unparalleled.

But at the same time, I was growing less and less thrilled about the software business.

There were upgrades to be taken care of, programmers to manage, and the customer support was taking on a life of its own.

People would email me and demand a response immediately at 3AM my time, and frankly they didn't care what time it was at where I lived.

They only knew that they had some problem with their software and they wanted it fixed now.

For someone like me... someone that likes to "set it and forget it"... someone that likes his money working for him, and not the other way around...

Well, that was just not going to cut it. 2 years after I plunged into the Internet I sold my software empire for a nice profit and began to hunt for other opportunities.

I bought ebooks, courses, attended seminars, hung out with guys like Gary Halbert, and tried to soak up everything I could.

I rang up and old law school buddy that ended up on the police force not far from where I lived and explained what had happened, and asked him for some guidance.

I expected we'd be talking about how to get this guy behind bars and what he told me completely blew my mind.

"Phil, you need to go out today and buy a gun. Keep it in your glovebox and take a new route home from work every day."

2 weeks later I had resigned my position from the firm and was on a plane to Hawaii, where I would spend the next 3 years...

Surfing.

Old habits die hard...

After 3 incredible years in Hawaii it was time to go home. And when I arrived back in California I knew there was only one thing for me to do.

Going back to the firm or practicing that kind of law obviously had little appeal after those fateful days in 2001.

And real estate... well, that was "set and forget" and just didn't require much of me. So, I was left with just one option.

That addictive vehicle which allowed me to run a software business without an office... without employees... and all online.
